Living Room Wall Art

The living room is the room we share most – with family, friends and quiet evenings at the end of a long day. Wall art here sets the mood for the whole home, so I like to keep it calm: one quiet focal point, usually the wall above the sofa. Drag the slider to see the same wall empty and with my hand-painted watercolor wall art, then try a different set.

Choosing wall art for the living room

Start with the light. In a bright living room with large windows, soft blues, sage greens and sandy neutrals stay fresh all day. In a room with less daylight, warmer tones such as terracotta, cognac or olive make the space feel cosy. Then look at what is already there: the colour of the cushions, a rug or a large plant is often the best colour to repeat in the art.

One wall, one story

Most living rooms have one main wall – above the sofa, a sideboard or the fireplace. Give that wall one clear piece or one matching set rather than several unrelated pictures. Sets of two or three paintings from the same series keep the wall calm and look intentional, which is why most of my customers choose a set for the living room.

Which size above the sofa?

Choose wall art that covers about half to two thirds of the sofa's width and hang it centred on the sofa. Above a long sofa of around 220 cm (87 in), a set of three looks calm and balanced; above a shorter sofa or an armchair, a set of two. Hang the frames about 20–25 cm (8–10 in) above the back of the sofa, so the art and the sofa read as one group.

Matching the style of your room

For Scandinavian and Japandi living rooms, airy botanicals and landscapes with plenty of white space; for coastal and Hamptons-style rooms, my blue corals, fish and herons; for a modern farmhouse look, neutral beige and black botanicals.

Not sure what fits your wall? Send me a photo of your living room – I help customers with colours, sizes and placement every day and am happy to suggest a set.
