Dining Room Wall Art
The dining room is where we sit and look around for a long time – over breakfast, long dinners and conversations. Wall art here is seen up close and often, so it should be interesting to look at and still calm. Drag the slider to see the same dining room empty and with my hand-painted watercolor wall art, then try a different set.
Choosing wall art for the dining room
Botanicals, herbs, trees and birds belong naturally at the table – they bring the outside in and go well with wood, linen and ceramics. Earthy greens, olive and warm beige suit a wooden table; in a white or Scandinavian dining room, sage green with soft black accents looks fresh.
Above the table or the sideboard
If your table stands against a wall, hang the art centred above it, so it can still be seen above the heads of everyone sitting at the table. Above a sideboard, the art and the objects on it – a lamp, a vase, a bowl – form one small composition.
Which size?
Choose wall art about two thirds of the width of the table or sideboard. Above a long table of around 220 cm (87 in), a set of three hung side by side at the same height gives the wall a calm rhythm; above a smaller table or a sideboard, a set of two. Above a sideboard, hang the lower edge of the frames about 20–25 cm (8–10 in) above it.
Open-plan living and dining
In an open-plan room, choose art for the dining area that relates to the living area – the same colour family or the same series – so the whole space feels connected. You can find matching sets in my botanical wall art and farmhouse wall art.
